What a year its been! Full of change, adventure and hard-work. One thing I am very grateful for is the new city I live in that has opened my eyes to so many different experiences. Victoria has a strong environmental focus that has helped me make changes in my life.
My New Years Resolution is to be more conscious of my decisions that effect the environment.. (as well as get in shape, eat healthy, be more social....OBVIOUSLY)
My sociology prof did a lecture on water consumption for food products. It was really interesting and shocking to see just how much of our water resources go into food.
75% of the Earth is covered in water. 97.5% of that water is salt water.
Humans cannot drink salt water. The salt can be removed but it is a very expensive and extensive process.
Therefore, leaving us with a very small percentage of usable, fresh drinking water.
WINE. One of my most favourite past times (yes, wine is a hobby for me).
It takes 120 litres of water to produce 1 glass of wine.
interesting...
COFFEE. The most vital part of the morning. The only reason we pass exams.
It takes 140 litres of water to produce 1 cup of coffee.
Scary thought on those days when you consume 6 cups...
CHOCOLATE. A girls best friend during the hard times (and the hormonal times).
It takes 2400 litres of water to produce 100 grams of chocolate.
:(
STEAK. The go-to celebration meal. The food that makes you feel like a real man (am I right ladies)
It takes 2400 litres to produce 200 kilograms of boneless beef.
I am not saying we all need to be vegan, sober, sugar free, coffee free. But just to be aware of the huge amount of resources used to produce everything we consume. Be conscious of what it takes to produce the things we love...
NEW YEARS RESOLUTION - BE CONSCIOUS/AWARE
* This is a global average and aggregate number. Policy decisions should be taken on the basis of 1. production location, 2. ratio 3. local impacts based on local vulnerability & scarcity.
